EXTERNAL COLLABORATORS

We searched for collaborators in other fields of design that were relevant to our ideas when we began narrowing down our concept. We chose interior designers as our main collaborators due to our concept’s emphasis on using the garden interior and exterior for navigation purposes. We also contacted a third collaborator when we started documenting our prototypes.

TIMELINE

WEEK 17

Feb 21                 (Text and Voice Messages)

We introduced the brief, discussed our initial ideas, and highlighted our glasshouse idea to Kaman. She suggested us to understand how existing visitors utilize the space. The brief would impact both existing and potential visitors because of the wall’s impact on the sense of privacy and peacefulness within the garden. She also discussed how glass windows work as a glimpse into the garden but to also look into different translucent materials.

Feb 22                (Text Messages)

We introduced the brief and our ideas to Xinyu. He gave us additional ideas like seed labs and discussed the difficulty of using live plants for display due to their seasonality. He is familiar with resin, a material we were interested in, therefore provided us with more information. He agreed with our idea of connecting the interior and exterior of the garden.

WEEK 18

Feb 24                (Face-to-face Meeting)

We discussed our prototyping situation with Xinyu and he made arrangements to create a block of resin for us at the RCA.

Feb 28                (Text and Voice Messages)

We updated Kaman with our prototyping ideas and received feedback and references. Her understanding of our concept as a connection between "in and out" reinforced our concept of linking an exterior element to something inside the garden.

March 1                (Text Messages, Face-to-face Meeting)

We sent photography references to Fan in preparation to take photos of our prototypes. She assists us at the photography studio and helped us take more professional-looking images.

WEEK 19

March 2                (Voice Call)

We received Kaman's feedback on prototypes and other possible implementation such as wall murals and dangling installations. This meeting influenced our decision to not only use the entrance on Royal Hospital Road instead of the Swan Walk entrance, but to also design a wall mount rather than a hole through the wall.

March 6                (Face-to-face Meeting)

We received Xinyu's feedback on our final idea and references of spherical, cylindrical and test-tube glass designs. We incorporated his suggestions into our final design and borrowed his crystal sphere to present on Friday with our resin prototype.
